Wed., Oct. 27th - WOW, What a year!

Well, it was exactly a year ago that I met my son! Mighty Max is so amazing! I love him so much, and I love how my Annie is so wonderful with him! They have a great relationship! Max has been overstimulated today - big halloween party and parade of costumes at his school, trip to Walmart, and birthday dinner for my mom! He smiled when he got home and saw his bed. I had the same reaction when I saw mine! Overall, we are all doing well! I am hoping that things will continue and I will be able to commit to adopting another little boy early next year!

I will try to do a better job updating this blog. I have found it difficult to maintain the e-mail connections for work that I need to, keep fb updated, and update this blog. Now that we are all healthy and settled into the new school year, I will try much harder to post here. THANK YOU to eveyone who have followed on here and have supported my family!!! May God richly bless you in return!!!

July 26, 2011

Holy cow! Just when I thought everything was better, I caught pneumonia - AGAIN! I have spent the summer resting as much as possible and using what energy I have with my kiddos! We went to the beach for week - Max LOVED it!!! Pix are posted on fb. Since we've been home, Max had his vision exam and he needs glasses. We go tomorrow to pick them out. I'm looking forward to it - it'll be fun. Today he had his orthopedic eval. and the Dr. said that braces won't help him. He said to just buy shoes witha good arch support. It has been four months since we got home with Max. In just four short months, it is hard to rememeber life without him. And Annie is such a wonderful big sister - a true role model for her little brother!

Sun., May 29th - Dedication Sunday!

Max was dedicated in church today! HOORAY! Annie went forward with us since she is a member of the church and such an active part in his life. Max immediately took a dive for Pastor Ron - he absolutely loves him! Ron tried to handle Max, a mic, his Bible, his glasses,... it was kinda commical. I was able to relieve P.Ron for a little while, but Max wanted to go back to him. Next thing - Max reached up and planted a big wet one right on Ron! It was really sweet. Pastor even said, "if you hanen't gotten to meet Max or haven't had one of his kisses...". This was followed by a wonderful service. It was great!

The afternoon just kinda flew by - lunch, dishes, laundry, nap,... then got Annie back to church for youth group. Now, time for bed. Bunches to do tomorrow!

Sat., May 28th - La Cucaracha!

Happy Birthday to my friend, Robin!!! Other friends hosted a birthday party for her - a Mexican theme. I was excited - I can actually cook Mexican! But, then I looked in my pantry. Uh, oh. Missing many needed ingredients. I told Annie that if I couldn't find enough ingredients to throw the cassarole together, then I'd just make green beans. "But Mom, green beens aren't mexican." Before I could stop them, the words "I'll sing La Cucaracha while they cook" came out of my mouth. She laughed so hard I thought I was going to have to administer resue breathing! The neighbors were saved from the dogs barking and the shreek of my horrible voice, and I was able to throw together a dish that was sufficient at best! I have some stocking up to do in my pantry.

Anyway, the party was so much fun! I always enjoy getting together with these friends! Max was a bit fussy until he discovered that he could open and close the kitchen cabinets. Then, he was entertained for an hour! Another wonderful and blessed day! Tomorrow is going to be a great day, too. Max is getting dedicated at church! God is great!

Friday, May 27th - Congratulations Class of 2011, but Excuse Me Please

Tonight was graduation. Whew, it's over. It all was going really well until I misnamed one of our board members and completely forgot to read an introduction given to me by my boss. Ugh! I try so hard and fall far short. Just thought I'd let everbody know, because come Tuesday morning I could be standing in the unemployment line with the graduates. I can here me now as I make my way passed them in line ... "congratulations, but excuse me." I'm kidding. I have a great boss who extends a lot of grace and gives people room to be human.

Annie and Max were both at graduation and did great! They are great kids and I am so blessed!

Thurs., May 26th - I'm Seeing Double!

As a school counselor, it is my responsibility to figure out who wins as valedictorian and salutatorian. Well, after much praying, panicing, trying to figure out where I went wrong - I didn't! We have two salutatiorians! Whew! And this wasn't the most stressful part of my day...I was able to miss two tornados!!! Annie wanted to come straight home after school rather than stay for athletic conditioning. I encouraged her to stay since I had a lot to do to get ready for graduation. We had nothing at the school, but everything looked terrible as we drove home. There were leaves all over the road, hail the size of baseballs, wind was whipping,... I told Annie, "it looks like a tornado went through here. Well, I was half right - TWO tornados had gone through our area. People's houses were damaged, our next door neighbor had a couple thousand dollar damage to each of their vehicles from the hail! Had we not stayed for conditioning, we would probably have been right in the middle of the danger. THANK YOU, JESUS!!! Max, in all of his childhood innocense, sang "la la la" all the way home - not a care in the world and had no idea the danger we had just missed. Annie, my little scientist, on the other hand was totally fascinated by the size of the hail and the whole tornado process. Me, well, I'm making an eye appointment - two salutatorians and two tornados, I THINK I'M SEEING DOUBLE! lol

Wed., May 25th - A Russian with a Southern Accent

Typical day at work - busy and a little more stressful than usual since graduation is this week. But, then I got to spend the evening with my kiddos. Annie is just precious and Max is sweet. I'm so blessed! My oldest daughter called. I put Max on the bed and answered the phone, "hello." Max immediately picked up the remote, held it to his ear and said "haaa." I have a Russian with a southern accent! How does that happen?! lol It was a good night. A busy day tomorrow...

Tues., May 24th - You're pulling my leg...

Wow - it has been two months! I was quite spoiled in Russia by the high speed wireless internet. Now that I'm home, I only have dial-up. So, I have updates, however, they haven't make it into the computer. Rather than bore you with two months worth of daily updates (like any of us have time to read that much!), I'll simply do one update and then keep everybody current from here forward.

First, I want to explain the delays. I became very sick when we got home from Russia. I ended up fighting pneumonia for over a month, and then bronchitis and a horrible cough for over a week. Four antibiotics and a heavy duty cough syrup later, I am finally able to maintain a normal schedule. Up until now, I have worked and take care of the kids - that's it! I am now surrounded by laundry and dust, but it was worth it to invest what little energy I had into my kids. God has a way of allowing us to be slowed down, especially during the times when we think we should be going the fastest. Anyway, that is the biggest reason for the delay in updates.

Now to the imoportant stuff - Annie, Max, and I got home on Satuday, March 19th. Max was not much more than a manaquin at that point. He didn't eat, didn't drink, didn't go to the bathroom (probably for the previous two reasons), didn't babble, ... I could go on and on. I think he was only ever sponge bathed because he was absolutely terrified of the bathtub, which is now one of his favorite places to be. He acted as if he had never seen his feet before and he was hypersensitive to them being touched. He also didn't know that he had hair. At one point he accidentally pulled is own hair until it hurt - the look on his face was priceless!

Keep in mind, we took this little boy from everything he had ever known. His life basically consisted of the same restrictions that we put on our kids when they are sick, but without the nurturing. He spent his days in the orphanage, usually in three layers of blanket sleepers, on a soft diet of porridge and a strict schedule. His living conditions, as well as his diet, were both very bland.

Then these two strange people came along and we suddenly threw him into a world of "firsts". We put him in street clothes (a rarity in the orphanage), put him in a snow suit and coat, hat, boots, mittens (none of which he had ever had on), strapped him in a carseat, strapped that carseat in a car, took off at 55mph, strapped the carseat in a train, went to a strange apartment, was traumatized by a bath, and then put in a strange bed.

Now, well, let's see... he tries to dress himself, laughes, loves his bath, loves music and playing on the piano, laughes, tries to talk (is doing really well with mumma, hair, bye-bye, and mocking sounds), cruises around furniture and is trying to get up the courage to let go, laughes, oh, and did I mention that he laughes? lol He is such a happy baby and fits so well into our family. He sleeps in the car, enjoys music, and gets really excited when we go to church! I am so blessed!!!

Medically, Max is doing well, too. He was quite malnourished when we got home. He has gained about 8lbs, has completed his OT and Speech evals (still waiting on physical therapy and eye appointment), had perfect bloodwork, and the hole in heart grew closed. God is the healer of broken hearts in all ways!!!

So, as you can tell, life is just one blessing after another! Not just with Max, but Annie is fantastic, too. She is so special - I don't deserve her! Easter Sunday, Annie spent most of the day hopping around on one foot. I asked "what are you doing goofball?" Here's how the conversation went:
Annie: Practicing.
Mum: Forrr???
Annie: Well, you know how we were talking yesterday about donating our hair to Locks for Love...well, I was thinking. There have to be kids out there that don't have any legs and if I donate one of my legs and use a prosthesis then another kid could have my leg and use a prosthesis and that would be one less kid in a wheelchair.

Oh, her heart! Traveling to the other side of the world to what once was the most feared place on earth and bringing home a baby isn't enough - she wants to donate her limbs! She is such a testimony of faith and love, and I am daily challenged to live up to the maturity of her heart! I am so blessed!

Well, this is it in the nutshell. Feel free to ask questions. I have been blessed to be able to share our testimony with several different church groups. This is always good for me - it reminds me of who is in control, where we've come from, and how blessed we truly are. I am the luckiest mum in the world!

Wed., March 16th - GOTCHA DAY!!!

Today had to be the best gotcha day anybody has ever had! It was really hard saying good-bye to the youthgroup at the university. We then went to the orphanage where I got my boy! I gave them the outfit, which fit perfectly - and it is BLUE! We said a sad good-bye to the director. She is such a wonderful lady! From there, we went to the train station. Max did fantastic in the car! He cooed and talked to Annie. Once we got to the station we grabbed lunch. I couldn't get Max to eat or drink anything, but Annie and I had our fill! With wonderful help from SWAF, we hopped out train and came to Moscow. Again, Max did great on the train! Annie is a WONDERFUL big sister! We met Ilya once we had stopped and he helped us with out luggage, took us to the apartment and even ran an errand to the convenience store so that we had water. He was wonderful! We are now snuggled in. I tried to get Max to eat and he simply rolled over and went to sleep. lol This was all just too easy! All of my concerns were completely unnecessary. I am truly blessed!!! Now it's time to challenge my Annie to a couple games of Rummy before bed!

Tues., March 15th - "My bags are packed and ready to go, standing here..."

Max now has a passport - HOORAY! It was a rather easy trip to and from the documents building, yet still with city traffic, took about 3 hours. We got back tot he hotel and packed. It was rather sad. St. Pete is struggling with the recovery from communism, as well as having lost the status of "Capital" of Russia. They struggle for their identity, which seems to be an indication of the same issues that the people struggle with individually. There is so much work to be done here. I feel truly honored that I was able to be here for this time and I to, struggle with seeing how this all fits into the big picture. I have made some wonderful friends here! I have learned some great ideas to take back to America. And, I get to bring home a son! I am so beyond blessed! At the risk of sound ungrateful, I a really sad about leaving. This town and these people will always hold a special place in my heart! So, tomorrow I pick up Max from the orphanage and we hop a train to Moscow! Tomorrow starts a whole new life for us and a whole new chapter of our adventure. I can't wait to see my little boy - and he will be wearing blue~!!!

IPAD and MORE GIVEAWAY!!!

For those of you who don't know, Annie feels that God wants her to raise the money for the adoption. I haven't agreed to this because it is such a large amount. Some friends have joined together and are hosting a "thank you" giveaway for donations. PLEASE HELP ANNIE HELP MAX! Donations are tax deductible, too! Also, please help spread the word by passing this to everybody you know! THANK YOU!!!

Mon., March 15th - What color are your M&Ms?

Got to see my boy today - HOORAY!!! He was so content and sweet today - not at all restless. He and Annie played and played. For about the first hour, he was content to just sit with me. He'd get down an play a minute, but then would crawl back up on Mumma's lap. He would interact, but it was like he just wanted Mummma to hold him. So, of course, I did (and threw in a kiss or two - or a hundred!lol). Toward the last half of the visit, Annie and Max built towers and knocked them down - over and over. He laughed each time. I love that laugh! After our visit, Annie wanted to go to the Oken. She found a couple traditional Russian toys that she wanted to get, and I got chocolate. Okay - Russia is so archaic they not only don't have blue M&Ms, they don't even have orange ones! Just red, yellow, green and brown - looked like a dirty stoplight! lol I also got a big ugly watch, that I happen to like. Anyway, tonight was the "big event" - Annie and I led the youthgroup devotional time. It was wonderful! These are a great group of kids. We focused on our adoption that was accomplished at the cross. Then, a great time of fellowship in my room until 3AM! Love the energy of these kids! Well, tomorrow is our last day in St. Pete. I can't believe it! I pick up Max's passport. I am so sad to leave - I pray that God allows us to return someday!

Sun., March 13th - Word of the day: PULL!

Today has been an emotional day! We went to church at ICA for our last time. We worshipped with a great group of people! I so wish we had about a year here! Sofie was sick so we didn't get to see her or Marina. That was also disappointing since I've grown to really love this family! After church, Annie and I walked around that part of the city for awhile. Annie then she announced that she wanted to go to the Teaspoon. I can't say that we've experienced a variety of food this trip, but I can say that we have had great food! Annie and I had a great discussion over lunch - it completely tapped into all of her creative juices and boy was she off and running! This lifted our spirits a bit. We then went to a little boutique where nobody spoke any English. Forgetting that Russia doesn't have the fire exit laws as we have in America, I stood there pushing on the door. Figuring that we must have use the other exit, I turned to leave just as a clerk walked up and PULLED the door open. It was at that moment that I had encountered the second sign I wish I had been able to read - PULL! lol After a quick trip to the 5 for some groceries, we went back to the hotel. Once the youthgroup got back, we played a card game called spoons. It was fun - a little violent, but fun. Lots of great discussions were happening! Tomorrow I get to see my boy! Then, Annie and I are supposed to speak at the youthgroup meeting in the evening. How exciting to get to form relationships with these kids and their leaders! We are so blessed!!!

Sat., March 12th - This just keeps getting better and better!

Well, we did something very practical this morning - we cleaned! After that we went out to eat - back to the Teaspoon! We no longer have to order - they see us and automatically place the order! lol We then went shopping, and actually bought stuff this time. I bought Annie a traditional Russian stuffed animal that talks and Max a stuffed teddy bear that talks. Of course, we have no idea what they say...! lol But, the big purchase of the day was a baby sweater for Max. It's BLUE! Not pink, BLUE! Three of the last four times I've seen Max, he's been wearing a baby girl outfit. After a very successful shopping trip, we returned to the hotel. Not long after we arrived, an entire youthgroup got here. They are from Texas and are here for a week long mission trip with Orphan Outreach! How awesome! Noticing that we speak English, they asked why we were here. Well, once they found out, they asked if we would give our testimony at a Bible study on Monday night. I have figured out that I have no idea what to expect on this trip - I'm just along for the ride. I'll just walk through whatever doors God opens. This just keeps getting better and better! On a sad note, tomorrow will be the last day that we will see our dear friends at International Christian Assembly. I just can't believe that this trip has gone SO QUICKLY! I'm sad to leave - I really wish I had about a year here. But, I'm excited about what God has for our family's future!

Fri., March 11th - Well, when I as young, I had to walk 25 blocks, in the snow, carrying a plate of cookies...

What a day! It started by getting to see my boy! He was so happy, as usual. He and Annie played and played. I enjoyed watching them so much! We had a long time with him today - almost the full 2 hours. Then I did get some bad news - the lectures couldn't be rescheduled - there was just no time in the university schedule. We are going to take a different approach - meeting Sunday after church. :-) After that, we stopped by an outlet mall and I found Annie the cutest Russian hat on clearance for only $6! It is perfect for this Russian weather and will be great for sled riding at home. Then I decided to be adventurous. When we got off of the bus, we walked the opposite direction from what we usually walk. I saw some letters on a store and told Annie I wanted to see what it was - it was a baby/toy store! Boy did we have fun in there! I was able to get Max diapers, wipes, snacks, toothbrush, etc. By the time we left, we were laughing so hard that I thought they were going to kick us out. We came back and baked peanut butter cookies for game night at the pastor's house tonight. After some rather creative planning, we got the address and directions to the Machino flat. Well, the bus driver said that he would tell us when to get out and he did. But, he dropped us off too early. We ended up walking 25 blocks, in the snow, carrying a plate of peanut butter cookies. Once we finally got to the flat, after all that walking, we opted for the elevator instead of steps. That was a good decision - until it got stuck! Renee stuck her head out and yelled "we're on the fourth floor." I replied "we might be a little late - we're stuck in the elevator." I don't know what she did, but the electric came back on and we made it in no time. We had a GREAT evening! We had tacos/nachos for dinner, met some great people, and played Sequence. At the end of the night, Pastor John drove us to the metro and we were home in two stops! Ahhh - settled in after a great day. Annie can now say to her kids "You think you have it bad - when I was a kid I had to walk 25 blocks, in the snow, carrying a plate of cookies, in zero degree weather...." lol

Thurs., March 10th - "HAVE YOU PEOPLE LOOKED OUTSIDE!"

We crossed a big hurdle today - we did laundry! I have not proven that I can procrastinate doing laundry even on the other side of the world! Annie and I had a good time and laughed as we pushed buttons and tried to figure out how to work a Russian washing machine, but in the end, nothing was ruined. And, since they don't have dryers here, we even got all of our socks back! After that, we were ready for some nourishment - Teaspoon time! We headed to the Teaspoon - our favorite restaurant! I think their stock has sky rocketed since we've been here. After a fabulous meal, we stopped by the mall. It's funny how people's attitudes have completely changed since last Friday (Russia's "Good-bye to Winter" holiday. Everybody is more energetic and talks about winter being over and how it is now being Spring. I just want to scream "HAVE YOU PEOPLE LOOKED OUTSIDE?!" lol There are still snow piles that have cars buried in them - to the point that you can't see the car. Whenever we walk anywhere, I hold Annie's hand for fear that I might lose her in a snow bank! It was around zero degrees outside, and the sun didn't shine at all. These are not the characteristics that I associate with Spring! lol Regardless, missions work continues. Lots of English lessons and practice. The two lectures are to be rescheduled, if possible. And, I get to see my boy tomorrow! HOORAY!

Wed., March 9th - The stinker can almost walk!

Today we ran some errands and then I got to see my boy! We went to the "Building of Documents" where we bought our train tickets and applied for Max's passport. This all took about half the time that it took us to get back to the hotel - traffic was HORRIBLE! The people from SWAF were very helpful and very nice. Once we got back to the hotel, we went to our favorite restaurant to eat - The Tea Spoon. We ate "pancakes" and drank Pepsi. We bought what looked like and icing covered pastry, but it was hard spun sugar filled with marshmallow cream. Can you say sweet! I can eat just about anything, but I couldn't eat it! Neither could Annie. We then hopped the bus to go see my boy! He was great today! At first he was really hyper, but we started singing and playing with him and he calmed right down. Music is the key with this little guy. He did something today that we didn't know that he could do - he held on to our hands and walked all the way across the floor and back (about 45 feet!). I called him a stinker for not letting us know that he could do this, and he just laughed. When his little legs got tired, he sat down and put his hands behind him so that we couldn't get them to stand him up. It was so cute! He is going to learn to walk pretty quickly once we are home. It won't take him long to figure out that he can keep up with Sissy better if he walks! It was so good to see him! They let us keep him for almost 2 hours. We came back to the hotel and I had a surprise for Annie - her class Skyped her and she was able to talk to her friends. It was great! She has really been missing her friends! This time it was just voices, but I'm hoping that next time she will have a video cam so that we can actually see each other. Tomorrow is a day of laundry and English! HOORAY!!!

Tues,. March 8th - Volleyball - not just for summer anymore!

Today was GREAT! Today was Womens Day (kinda the eqivalent to our Mothers Day). Our friends, whose children are learning English, wanted to go to the winter park and invited us. We got dressed (which takes awhile here with all the layers), ate, and headed to the metro. We had a day of new experiences. We started off sledding. Now this sounds fun, but in reality - it's work. They are Russian Finishing Sleds. Somebody sits on a seat while another person runs behind and jumps on the runners. This is done on flat ground. A good run my take you 10-14 feet, so we ran a lot! After that, we took the older kids to the shooting range. Annie got her gun! lol Valara did a great job teaching her how to use the sites and he taught her how to load the rifle. Then, off to the ponies! Annie and Sofie each rode a pony. Annie is a natural (she gets it from her sister!)and the girl completely let go of the lead. Everyone was amazed! Then we did something very interesting - we ate lunch OUTSIDE! Yes, we had a picnic in the middle of like 5 feet of snow! This is how they do things here - life just goes on. This is a major city and they just don't have room for health clubs and spas, and even if they did, the economy is so poor that nobody can afford it! Lots of families were gathered around eating their lunches and they drink hot drinks - usually tea. Hot tea is very popular here! By this time it was going on 3 and the kids were wet. On the way out of the park I saw something completely amazing. Three volleyball courts and they all were taken! Yes, volley - not just for summer anymore! They plow the volleyball courts, the basketball courts, and the soccer fields, bundle up and the game is on. We are now home, snuggled in, tired, and SORE! I found how that I am more out of shape than I thought. UGH! These missionary days don't feel much like I'm doing missions work because the focus is on teaching English - which we use anyway. Annie is doing a great job interacting with the kids here and teaching them! I just like to socialize so it doesn't feel like work to me at all. Anyway, tomorrow I'm back to adoption stuff for the day. I get to apply for Max's passport, get our train tickets to Moscow, and hopefully get to see my boy! :-)

Mon., March 7th - Lazy days in the winter!

My only plan for today was to get laundry done, and I didn't. lol We slept in. I have been fighting a sinus infection. It hasn't been horrible, but enough to keep me tired and lacking in energy. My big accomplishment for today was paperwork! I hate paperwork! I hit a point of crisis when I found out that in the hustle and bustle of getting ready for a month long trip, I made a stupid banking error. It wasn't a money error - it was a memory error. lol I completely forgot that the account I used had a $500 minimum per check, and wrote 4 checks for under that amount. Only 2 (both to the same person) had tried to clear, but of course didn't. Ugh! THANK YOU to Chessie Federal Credit Union and Debbie for working with me from the other side of the world to straighten out what was clearly my mistake. You guys are awesome! I also owe an apology to SWAF and the person they use to help with the Visa process. I'm too young to be having Senior moments like this! lol Actually, I was just trying to remember too many details while getting Annie and I both ready to leave the country for a month - not to mention everything I needed to bring Max home! Ahhh, my Max! I miss him so much! I'm really hoping I get to see him on Wed. Tomorrow will go fast - we are going to a "winter park." I'm not sure what all will be there, but it sounds fun!

Sun., March 6th - Communion in Russia!

We left early for church and were quite surprised when we got there - communion Sunday! What a blessing it was to get to partake of communion with our Russian "family"! There has been just blessing after blessing here! Church was wonderful, as always. We enjoyed the fellowship time and getting to know a few more people there. And worship is always wonderful! We were invited by Marina to got to lunch with she and Sophie. We had a great lunch followed by a shopping trip. I promised Annie that we would find a toy store. We found three! Yet, nothing struck her fancy. Everything is just so expensive here that she was struggling with getting something now, or waiting until she gets home where it only costs about a third. I think she has decided to keep her purchases here to only items that she can only get here or are souveniers. She was disappointed, but was easily consoled by a trip to Baskin Robbins! Yep - that's my girl! After a long and fun day, we are now home and are ready to crash! I think our trip to the winter park is being postponed until later in the week. This will give me a chance to do some laundry! I really need to put some Russian Tide to use! I'm excited to see what blessings will come our way tomorrow!

Sat., March 5th - TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

What a day! Emotional roller coaster is an understatement! It started off by going to a lawyer's office to have some papers notarized, then to the orphanage. I was supposed to get to see Max, but he was sleeping. I wanted to see him sooo badly since today the adoption is official! But, it just didn't seem right to have them wake him from his nap. I keep telling myself that we'll have a lifetime together. Anyway, from there we went to a bank to close an account. This was time consuming and somewhat emotional, but everyone was so nice! By then, Annie and I were starving! The driver and the interpreter, without knowing it, chose to go to my favorite pectopah - the Tea Spoon! They have the best pancakes (crepes) and have awesome fillings. I got my usual potato, mushroom, and cheese. Annie got hot fudge, without bananas this time! YUM! Then it was one more stop at another bank for money exchange and home. Yes, we have been here so long that we are referring to the hotel as home! We are now snuggled in and resting. Church tomorrow morning! HOORAY! We just love Pastor John and his messages! And worship is always great! Then, I promised Annie we'd find a toy store. She has been such a trooper through all the errands, paperwork, and WALKING! We have done more walking here than we have the whole rest of our lives! We are ready for a power shopping trip tomorrow!

Fri., March 4th - "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times..."

What a day! I woke up to an e-mail that said that I had an adoption appointment at the same time I was to be giving the lecture at the university. Since the appointment couldn't be changed, I'm having to reschedule the lecture. We headed out to go see my boy! We got there right on time, but the orphanage was different. There were decorations everywhere and people scurrying around. Come to find out, the children were putting on a program to celebrate "Women's Day" (which is a holiday coming up on Tues. - Russia's equivalent to our Mothers Day). We got to see the some of the cutest little kids dance and perform dances. I even got some on video! Then they celebrated by having a little snack and tea. Anyway, we had the best time!

We hurried back to the hotel to tell them why I missed the prayer meeting and to make sure that they got my message about the lecture. Guess what?! They had not gotten the message (yet, they were very gracious toward me), and prayer meeting had been cancelled. UGH!

At that point, it was time to go back to the hotel room to regroup. After a few minutes of resting and watching some funny videos with my little girl, we were off to tutor Anatole in English. What a great guy! God has some fantastic plans to use this man around the world! What an honor it is to know him!

After a great hour, we made a quick trip to the local grocery for batteries and chocolate! We then snuggled in for a dvd, great talk time, and Annie went off to sleep. I'm not far behind. Tomorrow is a BIG day! The adoption will be final and Max will officially have a forever name of Maxim Alexey Stickley! Ahh - that sounds so wonderful!

Thurs., March 3rd - How cold must it be?

Today was designated a "lazy day." We have been going hard and strong since we got here, and Annie and I were both very tired! I was afraid that she was getting to "run down" and that she would get sick, so we spent the day here at the hotel. We slept in, watched movies, ate leftover potato soup (yum!), and didn't even get dressed until time to go tutor Anatole. We spent an hour witha this amazing man talking about God, His will, and how He has worked in all of our lives. It was wonderful! We then decided to go for a quick shopping trip to the mall a couple blocks away. We had fun looking at all the jewelry here, but most of it is way too expensive to buy. Anyway, we laughted and had a good time! Everywhere we've gone since we arrived in Russia, the men wear really warm fur lined hats with ear flaps that fold down for when it's cold, but none of them have them folded down. How much colder than twenty BELOW zero does it have to be... lol Men are just big boys in Russia, too! Tomorrow morning we're off to see my boy, then prayer meeting, then English tutoring with Anatole! It should be a good day!

Wed, March 2nd - Pedestrian Speed Limits in Moscow?

I got to see my boy today! He is so funny - anytime he doesn't get his way, he just sits in the floor and yells at the top of his little lunds. He doesn't fuss or cry - just yells. Of course, it does't work, but it is funny. I just looked at him and said in a very sing songy voice "you can yell all you want to but you still aren't going to pull down the curtains." One of the social workers from court happened to be there with another family. She was laughing at how Max was crawling all of us. She said a few things to him in Russian and then said Mumma - he immediately looked at me! She was so surprised, and then she went around the orphanage telling everybody. They really underestimate what DS kids understand! Anyway, it was a tender moment.

We then left and went shopping! I learned two very important Russian words:s "sale" and "clearance!"

One of the guys couldn't make it to the discussion group so it ended up being a tutoring session with Anatole. He had a lot to do so he was a little distracted. We talked for about 45 minutes, and then he went on his way. Everything is so fast paced here - busy, busy, busy! One person made the comment that Moscow is very fast - not laid back like St. Petersburg. Well, if this is laid back, we're gonna get run over in Moscow! Ilya will be our driver/interpretor - I hope he is a body guard, too!

We enjoyed and evening "at home." We made potato soup, listened to some music, and watched two movies. I have no idea what tomorrow will bring!

Tues., March 1st - Humor: Courtesy of the Hermitage

Toured the Hermitage today - it was BEAUTIFUL!!! I have to say though, there is something just not right with them displaying a bust of John the Baptist! This flung the door wide open for a whole bunch of sick jokes and anyone who knows me knows, you can't leave the door open like that expect me not to walk through! lol I mean no disrespect for John the Baptist - after all, Jesus chose him to baptize Him. But, in combination with a very busy schedule and lack of sleep, this was hysterical! Regardless, the Hermitage was wonderful -I could spend months in there and not see everything! I'd like to go back, but I'm not sure it'll fit into the schedule. We made a quick stop at the Lego store in "the center" (the center of St. Petersburg) and a stop at the grocery store, then off to the English only round table discussion group. I listened to Anatole give his testimony. It's incredible to me that a person living in this culture could find a relationship with God. There is religiosity and idolatry all over the place. He said that as a small child he remembers looking at the idols that his mother and his grandmother prayed to and thought "maybe God exists in this somewhere." He accepted Jesus at age 24 and walked faithfully Him, despite not going to church because there was no evangelical church anywhere around where he lived. After a year he moved, and then was able to go to church. His pastor saw his passion for God and sent him to "missionary school" for 3 years, then he returned to Russia as a missionary in his church for 10 years. He is finishing his Bachelors degree in May and then is hoping to work on his PhD in Holland, to be a career missionary. How awesome! I look forward to hearing more at tomorrow's group - but not until after I see my boy!!!

Mon., Feb. 28th - The most important essential!

So, I start the morning by hopping a bus to see my son! I could stop there and it would have been a wonderful day, but it just got better and better. After a very active visit with Max, we headed to the OKEN (pronounced Okay - kinda like a small Walmart). After picking up a few essentials like deodorant, paper towels, and CHOCOLATE, we were off to the hotel to prepare for the English only round table. The group didn't go quite as planned, yet it was still great! One person, Alexander, was called to an important meeting. So, that just left Anatole and me. Anatole is a student here who is finishing his Bachelors degree in Biblical Theology and is applying to a Masters program in Holland. He had to write two important papers as part of his application - and essay explaining why he wants to attend school at that particular university, and a summary of his thesis. He had the papers completed so I helped him correct his grammar and punctuation. In the process we were able to talk a lot about God, His direction in Anatole's life, and his goal to be a career missionary. It was wonderful! It is so amazing to see God's gentleness in a man from such a hard culture. He truly has a gentle spirit and a fire to do God's will! Tomorrow, off to the Hermetage with Annie and Marina, and then back for the English round table discussion! HOORAY!!!

Sun,, Feb. 27th - Fun City!!!

Went to a wonderful church service this morning where I got to worship a deserving Savior with some awesome people! Pastor John gave a challenge on praying without ceasing! Left there with the intentions of heading to the hotel for a day of rest, but the kids had a different idea. Annie and our friends' sons wanted to spend time together so we went to their flat for lunch - some fantastic soup! Marina is a much better cook than I'll ever be! We chatted around the table and ate a BUNCH! Then, to fun city!!! Fun City is a place in their mall that is kinda like Chuckee Cheese. The kids all had a blast! The longer that I'm here, the more I like it! I can't imagine that this is the last time I'll ever be here - I can't believe that I've been here for over a week already! Big day tomorrow - I get to see my boy, go to the grocery store, and then host an English only round table discussion. Praying for God to be glorified in all that we do!

Sat., Feb. 26th - Family, Friends, Food, and Fun!

I got to see my boy this morning! HOORAY!!! He was sweet, as always! I got a few pics and two videos - they're posted on Facebook. After that, I took a bus that I've never taken to a metro stop, and then took 2 metros to meet my friends. We toured a public school of 400 students. The students go to school from age 7 to 17. They graduate in 11th grade. I won't bore everyone with the details, but it was very fascinating and I think we have begun an ongoing relationship between this school and Paw Paw Schools! How cool is that?! From there, we went to our friends' house where we ate a delicious meal, played outside in the snow (yes, they play outside even though it's below zero!), exchanged presents, began a jigsaw puzzle, ate another delicious meal, celebrated a birthday, ate delicious cake... we are very full of delicious food - thank you Marina and Valariy! After a metro ride, we are settled in, warm tired, and full. Looking forward to church tomorrow and worshiping a more than deserving Saviour!!!

Fri., Feb. 25 - To market to market to buy...

Today was GREAT! Got a call from my friend who said we were to be at a prayer meeting and then we could discuss the mission projects. I got to share with 13 college students what God has been doing in our lives, what Christ accomplished on the cross regarding us being adopted into the sonship, and about being doers and not just hearers of the word. We are not all called to adopt, but we are all called to care for orphans and widows. James 1:25-27 was the text I used. After that, I thought that Annie and I would be helping the cleaning crew with snow removal or some kind of physical labor, but instead I was asked to help in more academic areas. They said that I could help a couple of guys who need to work on their English, could give a lecture to the university staff regarding working with special needs, or give a lecture to the education students on working with behavior problems. Since I have so much time here, I chose all of the above. Starting Monday, I will be hosting an English only round table discussion every day at 4pm. At some point next week, I get to meet all the staff and the education students to help with child behaviors. What fun! Once we were finished with the university meetings, we went grocery shopping. We had so much fun. Annie was excited to find out that they have mashed potatoes, corn, and hot dogs here in Russia. We also bought the makings for macaroni and cheese and potato soup - along with a bunch of other staples. It was a blessing to find a grocery store that had most of the comforts that we needed. What I hadn't calculated was the fact that we had to carry the bags several blocks back to the hotel! Oh, my - my arms! By the time we got back I felt like I could have scratched my ankles without bending over! Another wonderful day today. Tomorrow will be one, too! I get to see my boy and then it's off to visit a school. Kids here go to school from age 7-17, and 6th-11th graders go half days on Saturdays. So, Annie and I will be visiting tomorrow, then to our friends' house for a meal, fellowship, and fun! We haven't seen the rest of the family so I'm really excited to see Marina and the kids!!!

Thurs., Feb. 24th - Eat fresh! And, what's that sign say?

My first big adventure in St. Petersburg - we used public transportation! That may no sound like much, but I'm a country girl. My idea of public transportation is walking on the same path with someone I don't know! Anyway, Annie and I took the bus to the orphanage today. We waited at the bus stop, saw the bus, I held out my hand, and he stopped. Of course when I turned around, there was Annie jumping up and down waving her arms like she was being attacked by bees - the driver would have had to have been blind to miss her. We got on, I showed him my paper that said where we needed to get off, and he took us right there! Then, I got to see my boy! He was so happy and giggly, and snugly and cuddly today! It was just nice! The pictures don't do him justice. Annie had a blast playing with him! Then came the real challenge - getting back. Umm, I was only worried about getting there to see him - it never occurred to me that I'd have to find my way back to the hotel! lol Well, we retraced our steps, which worked right up to the point that we didn't get off the bus when we were supposed to. We rode to the end of the route, which was on the complete opposite side of the city. So, we did what every female who is lost in a city does - we ate and we shopped! First we went to Subway - hey, we may have been lost, but we could still "eat fresh!" And then, we shopped. There was a really cool Lego store on the corner, why not?! The people in the store were very helpful at giving us directions back to the hotel. We took the metro back. So, we took two buses, ate out, shopped, rode the metro, and despite the language barrier didn't have any problems. There was only one sign that I really wish I had been able to read - it was on the door of the metro station and said "door swings both ways!" Yeah - I don't know which lasted longer - the bump on my head or Annie laughing! This evening my friend from the university showed up at my hotel room door with a cell phone and checked everything out at the hotel to make sure it is safe for us. How sweet! We are getting together tomorrow to plan out the rest of the week! HOORAY! His wife is so sweet and the kids are great - I can't wait to see them! I love it here!!!

Wed., Feb. 23rd - Today we are missionaries!?

Today starts the second part of our trip - mission work. We are now staying at St. Petersburg Christian University Hotel, and have made ourselves available to the university and to International Church Assembly for any work that would be helpful. We have offered everything from ministering directly to people to shoveling snow and cleaning toilets. Russia is on holiday today and are celebrating Protectors of the Fatherhood (kinda like our Veteran's Day). So far we have slept in, eaten, gotten the Internet hooked up, applied for a grant, and spent mother/daughter time together. It has been a very much needed break, allowing us to recover from jet lag, the busy schedule, and the intensity of court. We take the bus alone for the first time tomorrow morning - we get to see my boy!

Tues., Feb. 22nd - Court: and the verdict is...

Well, our trip is divided into three parts and today ended the first part. Today was court, but first we had to pack up all our stuff and check out of our hotel. We then went straight to the courthouse where I was briefed by the court interpreter. I was told that by the time we get to this stage, it's all just a formality - WRONG! I endured two and a half hours of interrogation - mostly around being Baptist! Somehow the judge thought that Baptists were some kind of cult and that I would isolate Max from society. I was caught very off guard and didn't handle it as well as I wish I had, but I was honest. No less than ten times during the hearing the judge said that Max had Down Syndrome and asked me if I had "thought it through." How do you answer "yes" ten different ways and stay respectful?! Especially when it's a dumb question - especially this late in the process! The only part that really bothered me and I had to bite my tongue was when she said that when a mother gives birth to a DS child she accepts this as her fate, but to adopt... AHHHH I wanted to yell, "his mother didn't accept this as her fate - she threw him away as damaged goods!" I calmly responded by saying "that's the beauty of this - it's a choice. I'm choosing to love and care for Maxim forever." She didn't like that answer, but I'm not sure she would have liked any answer! After a big discussion between the judge and the orphanage director (who is also a doctor), the judge heard the rest of the testimony. The prosecutor, who was there representing Max, was supposed to cross examine me, but she said that she didn't have any questions or concerns. After deliberation, the judge entered the court room and said "congratulations....". I'm not sure I heard much after that. I do remember not being able to hold the tears in and everyone in the court room (except the judge) laughing at me. After that, I got checked into the new hotel, we had a great lunch of traditional Russian pancakes (crepes), went grocery shopping, and I got to see my boy! My son! I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures! That upsets me, but there is nothing I can do about it now. :-( Today's visit is a memory! We said a sad good-bye to our friend/interpreter, Katia, and came to the hotel where we are settled in. The verdict is in - Maxim Alexeovich Smirnoff, as of March 5, 2011 will be officially Maxim Alexey Stickley!

Mon., Feb. 21st - The Dr. is in and in and in....

Well, today started off interestingly! I had my medical appointments today where I was seen by 8 doctors! Yes, 8! I started off with an infectious disease specialist who was concerned about my bloodwork (I brought the results with me), so I had to have it repeated. While waiting for an appointment in the lab, I was seen by a pulmonary specialist who asked if I had ever been tested for TB. I said yes and that the results came back normal. Well that was the wrong answer - it sparked a frustrating discussion regarding "normal" vs. "negative". UGH - the poor interpreter! After that lovely discussion, I got to have my blood taken. After digging around my left arm until I was sure the needle was going to poke out my shoulder, she finally got blood from my right arm. I am bruised from my forearms to my shoulders - at least I have a matching pair. Then we went to the Psychiatrist who insisted that I take the MMPI II - again! He was a very nice, distinguished gentleman who laughed at most of my answers. I was then seen by an oncologist and then three doctors at once! I'll leave out the details, but there is a Russian woman out there who knows me far better than I care for! After such an encounter, it was time to enjoy a Russian lunch - PIZZA! Then off to see my baby boy! Oh he was so happy today! He laughed and giggled until I had to make him stop so he could catch his breath. I am so blessed! Tomorrow is the big day - court! The fate of our family has already been decided in the Heavens, but will be announced by a human judge tomorrow on behalf of the Russian Federation. Oh, my!

Sunday, Feb. 20th - May I Have Some Fahrvergnugen Please?

Well, we were two of four people who spent the night in the Munich airport. We window shopped, played Rummy, and laughed ourselves silly. Annie had slept a bit in Paris so, although she was tired, she was having a tough time going to sleep. You have no idea how funny the word fahrvergnugen is to a slap happy 11 year old! Add a slap happy mom to the picture and you have a whole night of laughing in an empty airport that echos! We were quite easily entertained! We then heard the wonderful words that we had been waiting for - "now boarding...". Hooray! We were off to Russia. I think we were both asleep before the flight took off and we woke up when we hit the runway in St. Petersburg. Somehow the airline misplaced the carseat. After waiting while they searched, we went to claim our other baggage, and don't you know the carseat was with the rest of our luggage. I would have thought that someone would have known that (not to mention that it made no sense because if I had Max with me I would have had to carry him - which defeats the whole purpose of having a stroller! Anyway, at least I got it back. It was so great to see Katia (our interpreter/drive/friend)! We then went to a hotel where we delivered some clothes to other friends who adopted two precious little girls. We visited for awhile and finally made our way to the Anderson Hotel. We are settled in and ready for a good night of sleep in a real bed! Tomorrow is a big day - I get to see Max, but not until after 8 medical appointments! May I have some fahrfegnugen please?!

Sat., Feb. 19th - I've been to Paris, and that's all I got to say about that.

Well, we got out of Dulles with only one near casualty. With my seat in the upright position, my seatbelt securly fastened, and having been fully educated on what to do if we lose cabin pressure, I'm ready for take-off. The plane speeds down the runway, the nose of the plane lifts into the air, and the first aid drawer comes flying at the side of my head. Of course I can't move because I'm busy being protected by being strapped to my floatation device! I then activated the most important security measure at that moment - a padlock! The flight itself was pretty uneventful, once the girl across the isle from me self mecicated her panic attack! We landed in Paris and the luggage hobos were at work. After claiming all of our baggage, I had a long conversation at the airline counter. Lufthansa straightened out United Airline's mistake - ahh, the Us/Germany relationship! lol At this point, two hours have gone by but I'm still hoping that we can make it into Paris to see the Eiffel Tower. First we needed to visit the currency exchange vendor. After standing in line for awhile, I heard a scuffle betwen a very large African American gentleman and a very small Aisan man. So much for the romantacism of Paris - I was not feelin' the love! Come to find out I was in the line for a tax refund. I then got in the correct line, and the little Aisian man tried to move about 20 people from "his group" in front of Annie and I(the same thing that caused the scuffle earlier). Here I stand in the middle of about 70 Asian people and I say "no, no no, no, no." What was I thihking?! Lack up sleep and determination, mixed with a little stupidity, got us escorted to the front of the line where it took about 30 seconds for the transaction. It was very disheartening for Annie to see adults overtly lie and be so disrespectful, but I'm glad that she got to see that it is possible to stand up for yourself and still be a good of example of Christ. I then went to information to find out when the next shuttle would be leaving for the Eiffel Tower. It is then that I found out that there was a holiday and that it was rediculously crowded in the city. So, it was very cold, rainy, and crowded. I made the tough decision to not see the Eiffel Tower. I could just see us not making it back in time for our flight and Annie getting sick from being run down and cold. Annie didn't really want to go anyway. So, we bought a deck of cards and I taught her to play Rummy. I think she's addicted! We had such a good time! The highlight of her day was when we were shopping and I found this little metal box. I twisted it and turned it and couldn't figure out what it was. I held it sideways and the plastic emblem slid a bit. So, thinking I'm opening a pill box or coin case, I flung it open and a flame shot out the side and burnt my knuckles! I immediately scream and throw it, the manager is saying something to me in French - not that I really cared what he was saying at the moment, and Annie was rolling on the floor laughing! The good news is that my ring fits better. I'm not sure if it's because the heat sized it or if it's because of swelling, but... lol Then we were off to Munich for a night of more Rummy! It has been great so far. Tomorrow we leave for St. Pete where we will get to see friends adn settle in - I can't wait to see Max on Monday!

Fri., Feb. 18th-The Tale of a Threatening Modern Day Hobo!

This morning went much better! Got everything packed up, ran like fifty million errands - 2 banks since money is kinda necessary in Russia, Sears to get new boots since there is like 4 feet of snow and it's -20 there right now, and lunch at one of my favorite places - Chic-fil-A! before hopping on the plane. Got a wonderful phone call from the social worker during lunch telling me that she found a plane ticket for Max for a quarter the price that the airline quoted me. I booked it between bites - gives a whole new meaning to saving money while eating out! Then the challenge began. Three suitcases to be checked, one carseat/stroller to be checked at the gate, three carry ons, and only four hands! So, here we go - one carry on strapped to back, and two carry ons ride in the stroller. Annie pulling one suitcase and pushing the stroller while I pull the two oversized suitcases. We looked like a couple of modern day hobos! We made it to the gate at Dulles with no problems. Got our boarding passes and checked our luggage. Something told me that this went too smoothly. So, when I checked my stubs, they had only checked us to Paris. When I let them know of their mistake, they said that there was nothing that they could do and that it would have to be "straightened out" when we land. I'm sure that "straightened out" means that Annie and I will have to do our hobo routine again through the airport in Paris! I'm sure that his will bring a story for tomorrow! But, today's story doesn't end here. We then go through security. I'm thinking I'm good to go - we've done this before. I placed everything very confidently in the bins and Annie and I walk through the detector. No alarm beeps so everything seems fine, but then I'm pulled aside. A distinguished gentleman in a uniform pulled me aside and informed me that "there's a problem...we have to confiscate one of your items." Now, I have an aerosole can of mousse in my suitcase that could easily be considered an explosive, a computer and several other electronic devices that could be used to interfere with air signals, and a number of sharp objects that could be used as weapons, but the US TSA somehow decided that Max's 5oz bottle of Finding Nemo bubbles was a threat to international security! At that point, I asked the officer the only question that in my bewilderment I could muster the words - "How in the world can you stand there and tell me that you are confiscating bubbles and keep a straight face?!" Once I stopped laughing I told him to have a great day and to be careful - bubbles spill easily! lol Staoy tuned for tomorrow's story - Modern Day Hobos with Luggage Spotted in Paris! lol

Thursday Feb. 17th : 70 degrees outside - and a definite meltdown!

Well, I know that God is in control and that his timing is perfect. I get stuck somewhere betwen knowing this and human emotions. Everytime He allows a situaiton to arise in this whole adoption process, I think okay - I get it. Then, He takes me to a newer level of trust. I keep saying that nothing about this process is logical. Why me? Not in the sense that I'm a victim, but rather that I don't deserve these blessings! I'm just a country girl living in Oldtown, who is stamped with that horrible "D" on her forehead. Not only am I divorced, I'm female. Not only an I a divorced female, but I'm a divorced female in ministry AND I'm a member of a Baptist church. This is a recipe for disaster! But God's recipe's always work out. I'm not sure what the final product will look like, but I know that it'll have God's stamp of approval as long as I do what He wants me to do. Well, I'm rushing around, trying to get ready to go, and nothing is falling into place. I'll keep everbody "posted". lol

Thanks for helping the Stickleys to GO GREEN!

It has been my prayer from the very beginning to be able to complete this adoption debt free. That has not been able to happen, but it's not yet "complete" either. God is more interested in developing our character than giving us what we want. This whole thing has required faith and trust! What a character builder for Annie, too. When this whole thing started, she said that she felt that God wants her to raise the initial adoption costs. She has been right here very step of the way - reading blogs, reading e-mails, sending thank you notes, trips all over Maryland (and even one to Pittsburg!), etc.! I know in my head and heart that God not only will provide, but is providing along the way - but I have to admit, it has been really scary at times! Words don't seem to do justice to the way I felt yesterday when I got an e-mail telling me that there was already $221 in the Reece's Rainbow account for Max! Even now...tears! This is an overwhelming process at best. By the time I work my full-time job, manage my part-time business, do all the required adoption paperwork (including having to travel 3 hours one way 7 different times!), keep the household functioning, and make sure that I am totally there for my 11 year old - there just hasn't been time for fundraising. I was sleeping only 2-3 hours a night for a long time, but after Christmas just couldn't keep up the pace. I am so glad that the paperwork end is finished, but it sure doesn't leave much time for fundraising! It is hard to believe that in two weeks, I will be sitting in a Russian hotel getting ready for court! Again, thank you all so much for your financial support - there is no way I can do this without you!!!

Here we go......

http://reecesrainbow.org/sponsorstickley

We got our court date! We are so excited to think that two weeks from now we will be "fly'n the friendly skies!" I am posting this to keep everyone updated and so that everyone can see our Baby Max! I will update more later. Thank you so much for all your prayers and financial support!!! :-)

The "Bear" Truth

Okay - I've been getting all kinds of grumblings from friends about not updating my blog. There is one very good reason - I turned into a bear. Annie and I were exhausted upon our return from Russia. It seemed like we closed our eyes and it was Thanksgiving. We host an open house at our home for Thanksgiving for anyone who doesn't have anyplace to go. We cook a traditional meal, put it on the table from 1-3 for anyone who wants to stop by. People can come anytime they want, but if it's after 3 they may have to heat up leftovers out of the fridge. Anyway, after that came a very important tradition in our family - BLACK FRIDAY SHOPPING!!! We stood in line all night for items that were for someone else - it was a blast! We met some wonderful people that night. The couple in front of us began sharing with Annie and I how they were at the beach the week before to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. They received a call from their son who said "don't hurry home - you don't have anything to come home to." They had lost everything they owened in a house fire. They encouraged me with their fire story, I encouraged them with our adoption story and before we knew it, we had talked for 5 hours! God blessed everyone there that night (actually, morning!), and we all left with smiling faces and warm hearts (and full buggies, of course). It seemed like we went to sleep again, and when we woke up it was Christmas! We had a wonderful Holiday season that was filled with blessing from beginning to end. Part of what made the time go so quickly was dealing with paperwork. When I was wasn't wrapping presents, I was doing paperwork for the adoption. Sleep - paperwork, sleep - paperwork,... this was our cycle. Paper comes from trees so I've been telling everybody that Annie and I are like bears hybernating in the forest, it's just the the trees are already cut and processed! lol The paperwork really has been overwhelming. The reality is that the adoption is very expensive. I have applied for several grants and am getting ready to begin some serious fundraising. I guess you could say that I'm hoping the forest turns green soon. Please don't take that wrong - I can easily support my family and I am not out to make any money. However, I need help wtih the initial adoption costs. I hate debt and my little Max has some real needs. I want to be the best parent that I can be (especially since I am both parents in one). So, anyway, that's the "bear" truth. Hmmm - If I had a picnic basket you could just call us Yogi and Boo Boo!
